Welcome to 'The Future of' - a media enterprise created by optimists. Unlike most modern journalism, we like to look at global problems and see how we can solve them, discussing perspective and different ideas with the love of learning, rather than one sided views with hate behind them. What makes us special is you, reading this. We offer the opportunity for everyone to join the team of journalists, and be part of this movement sparking positive change!

Today I went to a beach clean up, but I got there in a diesel car. I gave up fish, but I still eat meat. I did volunteering in the rainforest, but I had to use a plane to get there. The point I am making is that I am imperfect, and you, reading this, probably are too. That’s part of being human, we are imperfect. The point is that 1000 imperfect people, putting in effort, is better than 1 perfect human. I heard this quote, and it stuck with me.
Today this plastic waste was collected by fellow volunteers, and then taken to be recycled. There may not be much plastic pollution at that beach now, but it is only a few more waves until plastic washes back up, suffocating another seabird.
Change on a consumer level is a big step. Taking your reusable shopping bag does make a difference. However, just like digging out weeds, we need to start at the root of the problem. We need to produce less and recycle more.

She is a genius, and her idea is that advertisers pay for their advert to be on the box, thus paying for the box and the sanitary products it contains, therefore it’s free for the consumer. It’s like how social media apps are free, because businesses pay to advertise on the platforms.

114.08 million metric tons of banana waste-loss (Acevedo et al. 1) a year - that’s just bananas. I don’t know that many people that eat the skin of the banana, mine usually ends up in the bin. But the skin isn’t the only banana waste, in fact the whole stem-esque tree often ends up as waste, as only on banana crop grows, usually for 8 months, the bananas are taken, and the stem is chopped down. Leading to the whopping 60% of banana biomass being wasted. Given that food waste accounts for 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions (Amicarelli et al. 1), and holds a trillion dollar price tag, this banana issue is bad, not banoffee.

But.. There’s a banana resolution, from bioplastics to blazers, the innovation and opportunity around banana waste are forever ripening.

No, you don’t have to worry about a cow stealing your nigiri, instead scientists have found that seaweed in cattle feed can reduce methane emissions.
Diana Reyes Gomez is a fabulous scientist at Cornell University, and she and her team are researching how a red seaweed - asparagopsis genus - in cattle feed is reducing a cow’s methane emissions by 97%. This links in with the Ester Boserup theory, and Hannah Ritchies idea in her book ‘Not the end of the World’, that we will be able to adapt greener and more efficient farming practices by 2050, so we are able to flourish in a sustainable future.

Fried, satay, stir fry, curry, burger, roast, grilled: chicken. (Hard to think about looking at these cute chicks) The meat loved world wide is so popular for a reason - it’s efficient. These birds don’t take up much space and will peck away at anything - usually your leftovers, and the cherry on top is they produce vitamin and nutrient dense eggs. This productivity has a name. It’s defined as a feed conversion ratio - FCR - the input of food required for total output of edible produce. The equation is similar for each type of output, but obviously there are some technical variations when calculating the FCR for meat versus eggs versus dairy products, as these all undertake different mass forms. Dairy products follow the feed required divided by gallon or litre produced, and eggs follow feed divided by per dozen of eggs produced, whereas meats follow feed divided by total edible output in kilograms.

Imagine stepping out on a beautiful sunny day, only to return looking as drenched as your dog after a swim in a stream. We are increasingly accustomed to such unexpected and dramatic weather changes. With catastrophic cyclones, floods, hurricanes, droughts, and forest fires on the rise in recent decades, we are left with pressing questions. A tongue twister perhaps, but I would like to lay out the plan of this enterprise. Most people have a five year plan; so does this enterprise. Now the vision is aspirational, but to be successful you have to start off delusional. Eventually I’d like ‘The Future of’ to be a household name, not for the purpose of fame, rather I’d like to inspire all generations to learn, discuss ideas and think critically, rather than fall down the trap of hateful echo chambers.
